Prologue
Like a ship's distant smoke among the lines of the horizon, the year seemed to fade into the oblivion of the unknown, perfectly outlined and catered to by the foggy memories of her past. . .
Glassy blue eyes, as clear as the sky- yet as dark as their time. Soft black hair that felt like fleeting water in her fingertips, much like the fleetingness of his actions- so careless and imperfect. All hidden beneath the veil of some brilliant dream. All leading to this moment where nothing but now existed.
All that remained was the image of the rocky trail in front of her- the pounding of her heart and the way her feet seemed to barely hit the hard earth, how she soared above the vast forest with newly obtained vigor.
And this particular moment was the now- a time she'd never found herself to roam in, even if it was indeed reality.
But what was she running from?
Nothing made much sense to the young water bender anymore. It seemed the older she got, the more her past lives cried out from some distant dream- all of which were becoming lost in the whirl of her own mind.
Gods help me find some sanity- some sanity beyond the pretty demons that have haunted and tormented my soul. . .
But as she felt the hot fire of his hands lick the bottom of her fading cloth- she began to remember just what she was running from.
“Not so fast are you now Agua?”
And when she fell- she understood why she needed to keep on moving. But only barely.
“I've got you now!”
And when the air felt like it was burning her from the inside out as she inhaled dust- she knew that salvation from some distant savior was out of the question.

Akiko walks along the some how calm surroundings of this mysterious place. She blinked out the dust that flew into her eyes. She is a quiet earth bender and hasn't seen a lot of people lately, that's when something caught her eye. She saw a girl lying on the ground, probably unconscious. Akiko walked over to the girl, then leaned over causing her long, black hair to cover her view, her blue-gray eyes shining in the small sunlight. She pushed her hair back and looked quietly at her. She tilted her head to the side in confusion. Then she poked the unconscious girl, hoping she'll wake up. She stood back into a upright position, her long white dress flowing with the wind, she took a quick glimpse at the blazing sun. The timid earth bender backed away a little from the girl, and plopped down on the moist grass. As she waited for the mysterious girl to wake up, she spotted a burnt piece of cloth. Then she thought fearfully,'Has fire benders been here?' She looked worriedly at the girl, then continued to wait....

Running was the only answer that made sense. No matter how much she called into the depths of the unknown, her response was always perfectly in tune with her emotions.
Not so fast are you now Agua?
But indeed she was fast. Not even a blind cat could mistake the sheen of sweat that had formed on his tired face as he raced to catch her. But her pace was no match for fire- and it had consumed her completely.
The heat. The sun. The agony of defeat. All together formed this bare consciousness that plagued her daily.
And now it was watching her. . . . Get up. She thought loudly. Do you understand- Get. Up!
Her own legs were unwilling to move, as the rest of her body at the moment.
You really are useless aren't you Agua?
Yes Yes. I suppose I am. . .
Nothing had quite been the same to her since he left. She understood how much of a game she'd played for so long, but getting over that kind of abuse was never easy. Instead she'd drowned herself in accomplishments. Getting through things one step at a time. Knocking down the marks. Drawing the line.
And she was d**n proud for doing it.
So if anything was for certain- it was a fact that she could get out of this fire alive. All she had to do was breathe.
One breath. One rise. One fall. That was it.
But why was it so hard?
Aimee scraped the dirt with her long fingernails. Her eyes shot open to reveal the whites of her eyes. And she gasped loudly- spit cascading out of her mouth. Though as she tasted the copper she realized it wasn't spit. It was blood.
She'd practically drowned in it.
Coughing and gasping for air, Aimee's small muscles found the strength to turn over. The dirt was blotchy and purple as she hacked up her own pool of suffocation.
Her body spasmed as it rejected death. It was strong- the desire to live overtook her instincts and she hacked harder and harder, pounding her own back with her fists.
Her hair spilled out over her face- the sweat from the effort pouring down the tangled braids. And finally she was still.
Aimee dropped to the floor- her back heaving, limbs weak with exhaustion.
And it was then she realized that there were two pulses- the sound beat into her eardrums.
Panic overwhelmed her, and she stumbled weakly into a sitting position.

The girl was still unconscious. She tried shaking her. She waited for a response, her eyes filled with concern and worries. I have to untangle this mess. Has the fire benders been here? Her eyes were watery of concern. She gave up. She sat there, crying, because of her failure...

As her focus came back, and her razor sharp senses focused upon the figure she thought was so threatening- she found that this creature wasn't a threat at all.
She was anything but.
Aimee watched as the girl struggled and heaved with tears. Her heart melted with shame. She'd become so cold- so cynical. It kept her alive, yes, but didn't do anything to serve the greater good. She isn't dangerous at all. . . just someone wounded.
Someone like her.
Aimee slowly stood, feeling the warm air caress her shoulders. She carefully walked over to the girl. When she looked down, she smiled softly. The light of the sun illuminated her face- filling her heart with warmth she hadn't felt in a long time. As she grew she realized what strength she had in her compassion for others. She was no longer afraid.
For she'd learned long ago that weakness was being afraid to show it.
Aimee extended a tan hand to the girl, offering her friendship and support.
"Do not be afraid, friend." she said gently. It disturbed her suddenly how her voice mirrored..well, his calm. But her feelings were real and sincere. There wasn't poison beneath them.
