A New Form (Bridging Thread, Closed) « Thread Started on Feb 15, 2008, 1:21am »
Hayato stood waist deep in the cool water beside the roaring falls. He had come here, a full three days travel south from Ba Sing Se, to practice. Having been in the Fire Nation Navy had its advantages and on a nearby rock sat an open scroll. This scroll however was unlike most, well actually it was old which did make it like most scrolls but it was the contents that made it unique. Hayato had stumbled across this scroll in the depths of a Fire Nation Library during his only trip to the Fire Nation capitol. True, it was unusual for most units from the eastern fleet to travel to the west but the ship Hayato had been on had carried back some precious cargo home for some general and so it was that Hayato got into the lair of the enemy.
Now even though he had been in the navy a man on a week long furlough Hayato had nowhere to go and nothing to do, and to be seen lounging around the place that was supposed to be his home might have aroused some suspicion, so Hayato had spent most of his time in the great library sorting through the texts that had long been abandoned to dust and cobwebs. It was there that he had found the scroll, obviously from a more peaceful time when the exchange of knowledge between nations was encouraged. It had been beneath a large pile of other scrolls and he had nearly missed it and would have were it not for a small notation on the handle of the scroll indicating that it was from the Water Tribe.
So what else could he have done? Hayato stole the scroll, though it took several days to create a passable copy; after all it was a library, and libraries notice when things go missing. It had made sense though to take the original instead of the copy, after all it was the property of his people and few in the Fire Nation would value it as they would. In addition Hayato made a few little changes so that if anyone did find it they would miss out on a few of the scroll's more important details.
But that was just the story behind how he got the scroll and he had allowed himself to get sidetracked. Hayato reflected that this scroll was much more important than that because it outlined two Waterbending styles that he had never seen before. The first was called Cold Dolphin style, like all Waterbending styles it was named after a sea creature or an element of the ocean. The general premise of this style was to engage in quick and painful attacks while minimizing your own energy consumption. Though it would never stand up against a Firebending Master the Cold Dolphin style wasn't meant to, it was for facing waves of enemies and was meant to prolong a Waterbender's life in a dire situation giving them strength to ward off attacks until help could arrive.
This form Hayato had mastered as he had trudged across the continent and though it was a specialized form it did not seem too distinct from the general bending that all Waterbenders knew. 'Perhaps rather than a strict form it could be seen as a style meant to teach focus and concentration rather than waste.' Hayato had had that thought many times but there was nothing profound about it and it took him no closer to his goal which was the second form on the list.
This form was called "Mako" after the great sharks that hunted in the depths of the oceans. Here Hayato had found his greatest surprise because this form seemed to be directly influenced by firebending. Apparently some master long ago had closely studied the firebenders and concluded that such powerful attacks weren't limited only to firebenders and had sought to bring them into waterbending. Sadly the scroll was incomplete and rather than lessons the entries were almost like a journal detailing the master's progression in his experimental form.
"Day 601," Hayato recited aloud, he had read the entry enough to know it by heart. "The sheer power required to do this is phenomenal and I fear that my technique shall always be left incomplete. I am not a young man and the challenge would have even been difficult for me then. I have journeyed to the great waterfall Kishu south of Ba Sing Se for it is one of the tallest in the world, and I mean to cut it." It had taken Hayato some time to realize what the master meant by "cut it" after all for a water bender splitting the river coming over a waterfall wasn't a great challenge. It wasn't until Hayato had reached Kishu Falls that he realized what the master meant. Cutting these falls would be like cutting the ocean itself and the focus and power required would only be possible for the most powerful of bending masters.
"The nearby peasants come out to watch me and though at first they were greatly interested I know that they only come to gibe me and to harass me as I train." From that point on the master seemed to realize that he had been rambling and so he refocused on the bending form. "To perfect this technique great focus is needed. More than that an awareness of the moon's energy is needed because it is always pushing and pulling on the tides even when it does not hang in the sky. Even so this technique might only be possible at high tide when the moon's pull is its strongest so it would be best to practice at those hours. When the moon is high stand beneath the falls and assume a broad stance. Feel the moon's pull on your body and in the pool around you, let it push and pull the water inside your body until you are one with its movements. When harmony is achieved strike! Let the stored up force of the moon be your weapon and cut the falls in two!"
Hayato had tried this several times at both noon and midnight but he was no closer to finishing the technique than when he had started. He was tired and his whole body ached and complained when he tried to move, if nothing else he would at least be much stronger by the time his training ended. Even on his best attempt he had still only managed to cut halfway up the falls, which was nothing given their size.
Rolling up the scroll Hayato tucked it away in the special case that he had brought with him to protect it. He had spent too much time here and he was worried that they might be following him so he would head north, back to Ba Sing Se though he would use a different route than the one he came by. There in the city he might be able to loose them and himself. He would come back to this technique one day but right now he just didn't have the time.
