Name: Toph Bei Fong
Age: 12
Powers/Abilities: Master Earthbender
Affiliation: Earth

Appearance: Toph has black hair that that she puts in a bun with a green headband. She has pale, green eyes (cloudy because of blindness) and pale peach skin. She wears a green shirt and green pants. Around her waist is a brown belt and she wears an off-white apron overtop of her clothes and underneath the belt. Toph also wears green and brown wristbands and ankle bands. She does not wear shoes because she is an earthbender and she can only feel vibrations in the ground while barefoot.

Personality: When Toph is first introduced in the show, she brings an entirely new personality to the group. Sarcastic, cunning, strong, adventurous, and fiercely independent. She is not afraid to speak her mind, and honest when criticizing others. Toph tends to get annoyed when people try to help her with things. She insists that she can take care of herself, and that she does not need any help with anything. However, her encounter with Iroh told her that there is nothing wrong with people wanting to help her, and nothing wrong with helping other people. This taught her a valuable lesson, thus leading to Toph lending a hand to her friends in battle.

History: Toph Bei Fong was born in the Earth Kingdom city of Gaoling. She is a member of one of the wealthiest families in the Earth Kingdom. The symbol of the Bei Fong family is the Flying Boar. Aang has a vision of Toph in The Swamp, and King Bumi told him that he had to find a teacher who “listens to the earth” or, in other words, a teacher that has mastered Neutral Jing. Toph has the unique ability to sense vibrations in the earth and “see” where everything is. She can feel even the most minute things with her feet, such as: ants crawling on the ground, a person shaking, and tiny impurities in metal, giving Toph the ability to bend metal. So far, as seen in the show, Toph is the only earthbender who can bend metal. She is also very keen in her sense of hearing. Toph is able to hear beople breathing from several yards away, and can tell who a person is by the sound of their voice. Toph tells Aang, when his bison gets stolen, that she never forgets a voice, and is able to point out who stole Appa.

Relationships:
Aang: Toph and Aang have ther differences and similarities. While Aang can be jumpy and energetic, Toph can be calm and synical. Like Aang, Toph loves adventure and likes to be with her friends. However, while Toph enjoys fighting and bending, Aang avoids battling as much as possible. When Toph first meets Aang at Earthrumble 6, he easily knocks her out of the ring with airbending, and Toph does not give Aang a chance to speak to her, leaving the arena. With this, it shows that Toph can be somewhat of a sore loser when her abilities are shunned.

Aang and his friends eventually find the Bei Fong estate along with Toph, who happens to be outside at the time. Aang tries to tell her about his vision and King Bumi, but Toph has a puzzled expression on her face and Katara puts Aang’s words into a simpler phrase. Toph reacts by telling Aang and his friends to leave, or she would call the guards. Later, Toph hears that she and her parents have a visitor. Her father asks who the visitor is. It is indeed the Avatar. He and his friends join the Bei Fongs for dinner. While they are eating, Toph’s parents ask Aang when he thinks the war with the Fire Nation will be over. He replies saying that he would like to defeat the Fire Lord by the end of summer, but cannot do that without finding an earthbending teacher first. They suggest Master Yu, the head of the local Earthbending Academy in Gaoling. He has been teaching Toph since she was little, but he and her parents didn’t know that Toph has been teaching herself more advanced techniques for the past six years. Aang refuses, saying that Toph must be a great earthbender. Toph glares at him in response.

Toph’s father says, still thinking that Toph is at the beginner’s level of earthbending, that she is still learning the basics, and that she is not able to help him. Aang, Sokka and Katara exchange glances and Aang tells him that she is probably better that he thinks she is, referring to her ranking at Earthrumble 6. Toph moves the ground underneath Aang’s chair, causing him to jerk back, then forward again to shut him up. Aang keeps talking, only causing Toph to force his face into his food bowl.

After dinner, Toph and Aang call a truce, and they go outside to talk. Toph tells Aang about her ability to sense vibrations in the earth with her feet, letting her “see” where everything is. Aang is amazed by this, but Toph tells him that her parents don’t understand, and that they have always treated her like she was helpless. Before anything is decided about Toph being Aang’s teacher, they are captured by the Earthrumble 6 host, Xin Fu, along with the boulder and the rest of the tournament members. They leave a note for Toph’s parents, saying that they will exchange Toph for a sack of gold pieces, because they thought she and Aang cheated and split the prize money Aang won. Toph’s father, Master Yu, and Aang’s friends all come to the arena to deliver the prize money. They release Toph, but keep Aang to deliver to the Fire Nation. Katara and Sokka are ready to fight Xin Fu and the boulder, but all the other tournaments members come in and the siblings are outnumbered. Katara runs over to Toph, saying that there are too many opponents and that they need her to help. Her father says that Toph is blind, tiny, helpless, fragile, and that she cannot help them.

However, Toph says that she will help them, and starts walking back toward the arena. She easily defeats all of the tournament members, including Xin Fu. Katara and Sokka are able to get Aang out of the metal cage he was in, and they go back to the Bei Fong estate. Toph apologizes to her father for keeping her life secret from him, but makes a point when she says that he was keeping her secret from everyone. Her parents tell her that she will be guarded 24 hours a day and that Aang and his friends were no longer welcome there. Later that night, as the group of friends were about to leave on Appa, Toph comes running up to them, saying that her dad changes his mind and that she was free to travel the world. However, it is shown that Toph is simply lying and running away.

Sokka: Toph and Sokka are alike in the fact that they are both sarcastic and demanding. Toph likes to tease and playfully pick on Sokka. She likes to make fun of his non-bending, consequently infuriating him. Toph gets a good laugh out of this, only making Sokka madder. She also finds pleasure in complementing on something of Sokka’s by the way it looks. Sokka thanks her, only to remind himself that Toph is blind, and cannot see what she was complimenting on. She has done this not only to Sokka, but to all three of her friends as well. (i.e. complimenting Sokka on one of his drawings of Appa, and announcing that she saw an ancient library they were trying to find while riding on Appa.)

Katara: While Toph is sarcastic, strong, and steadfast, Katara is calm, nurturing and supportive. This goes to show that Toph and Katara are almost exact opposites. Toph is also different from Katara in the way of her training Aang. Katara tends to be supportive and patient when teaching Aang waterbending, and Toph is more like an army sergeant when teaching Aang earthbending. But overall, the two girls have become pretty good friends while knowing each other, probably only because they share the same gender. Toph and Katara get into frequent arguments though, usually because Toph mistakes Katara’s friendly gestures as acts of pity for her blindness.

Appa: Since Toph relies on solid ground to feel her way around, she is completely blind when riding on Appa. She honestly admitted that she hates flying because of it. She blamed him for leaving a trail of shed fur when Toph and her friends were being chased by Azula, Mai and TyLee. Although she was right, Aang jumped immediately to Appa’s defense, yelling at and blaming Toph. When Appa was being stolen by sandbenders, Toph did all she could to protect Appa, but failed and he was taken away. Her sadness afterwards shows that Toph does care for Appa as a friend.

Iroh: When Toph shortly departs Aang and his friends for blaming her for being chased by the three Fire Nation girls, she runs into Iroh, Prince Zuko’s uncle. He gives her tea, and Toph says that he probably thinks she can’t take care of herself and that she shouldn’t be traveling alone. Iroh tells her he wasn’t thinking that, only that she looks a bit young to be traveling alone. Toph points out that he wouldn’t even let her pour her own cup of tea. Iroh responds, saying that he poured her tea because he wanted to and for no other reason. He says that there is nothing wrong with letting people who love her help her; not that he loves her, he was just making a point. Toph thanks him for his advice, and continues on her way.
